Pilgrims, who come from far-off states and other countries, offer cartons full of chocolates to the baby deity. The Munch Murugan or Bala Murugan has become a popular pilgrim destination which attracts many devotees from all over the world. There is now a belief that all your wishes will be fulfilled if you present the lord with Munch chocolates. These beliefs may have transcended from years and years ago but in Kerala, Balamurugan, who is the son of Lord Shiva is a huge fan of Nestle's chocolate Munch! In the Chemmukathu Sree Subramaniya Swami Temple in Alappuzha, Munch chocolates are offered as prasad. While certain places have the elaborate pujas to appease the Lord, at others people make specific offerings which are the particular Lord's favourite. We have varied religious beliefs and traditions associated with each of them. Indians and their religious sentiments are something that has been widely written and spoken about. So much so, that the god is even popularly called “Munch Murugan”. Most Hindu gods are associated with some favorite food or the other – Ayyappa is fond of ghee, Krishna of butter, Ganesha on laddus, but thanks to a little boy, Alappuzha’s Balamurugan became fond of chocolates, Munch in particular, around seven years ago. The shrine was recently renovated to accommodate the rush of patrons, and especially during exam season when the children come in droves to offer chocolates to the god in exchange for good marks. Soon everyone was offering chocolates to the god, and performing extreme acts of faith like the Munch Para where a large vessel of Munch is offered or the Munch Thulabharam where Munch equal to one's body weight is made as an offering to the god. The boy was cured and the story spread like wildfire. While the parents, like every other devotee, offered oil and flowers, the boy refused to offer anything but a Munch bar. As a part of his cure, his parents took him to the temple priest. While in sickness, the boy continued chanting Murugan’s name. His parents scolded him, and the very next day he fell sick. However, seven years ago, a boy rang the temple bell while playing with his friends. Earlier, the devotees would offer whatever they desired, just like in a normal Hindu ritual of an offering. If the story is to be believed true, this taste of chocolate has been “acquired”. The temple authorities say that, the reason of this tradition began is still not completely known. In north India, he is often addressed as Kartikeya. The Sree Subramaniya Swami Temple in Kerala is an abode to Balamurugan. The temple of Murugan (also known as Kartikeyan or Subramanya), the son of Lord Shiva, was recently renovated, keeping in mind, the increase in devotees.

It is said that the Lord himself came into his dreams and instructed the devotee to build the temple. The shrine was built by a devotee of Lord Murugan, decades ago. Not only them, the tradition is now followed by the elderly as well. During the exam days, the temple is flooded with students who offer chocolates to “Munch Murugan” and seek his blessings. It is famously known as Palani of the South temple, as the deity and the lamp were brought here from Palani Murugan Temple, Dindigul. Sri Subramanya Swamy Temple is located few minutes away from the main town of Alappuzha district.
